So i recently came into posession of an Olympus OM-1, the brainchild of Maitani and the team who could put together something so compact, so complicated and so beautiful in a magnesium alloy and plastic sandwic that is a joy to hold.

The OM-1 in my hand
The good
- The shutter works a treat, i tested it against a DSLR and the curtains seem to be in sync and not too fast or too slow. I am however a bit skeptical of 1/1000s as there’s little gap for light to make it through. But that could be of course how slow the mechanical shutter is on this camera.
- The film advance is working well
- It’s beautiful
- The ISO dial spins freely when commanded to.
- The shutter curtains have no pinholes or tears
The bad
- The self timer is broken, it’s jammed at the bottom position, likely the spring broke and released the tension of that mechanism
- The film counter is broken, can’t know how many shots you have left until the end of the roll.
- The light meter is broken, that’s why there was a loose thread in the middle of the
